The Old School Tearoom
Main Street, Hebden, BD23 5DXRecently I came across this old school from 1874 which has been converted into an amazing tearoom. You can find this place in an idyllic little village called Hebden which sits between Grassington and Burnsall in the Yorkshire Dales. Well…it looked so lovely I just had to drop in and I’m so glad I did because it’s simply fabulous!
To get to the tearoom I drove through Grassington and then on into Hebden itself through some of the prettiest countryside I’ve ever seen so that was a bonus. Martyn, the owner of this family run business told me that it’s been here for 12 years now come this December.

The school itself dates back to 1874 but even after being converted into a tearoom it still retains its character! The old school clock was restored in the millennium and continues to chime every single hour. How cool is that for a bit of history!

What they offer
It has free parking out the front, outdoor seating, free WiFi and it’s also dog friendly. There’s a great choice of home-made meals with breakfast being served until 11.30am but they also offer snacks, lunches, Yorkshire cream teas, home-made cakes and desserts. They even have a kids menu offering smaller portions. You can also buy coffee or choose from a selection of at least 12 flavours of tea!

Just for the kids
I’m sure the kids will love checking out the guinea pigs, the chickens and the pygmy goats Hilary and Graham. Hilary herself came happily trotting right up to the fence, wagging her tail to say hello. There’s even a play park for the kids next door too.

This cafe has more than food and drink to offer however. Oh! And btw, I can certainly vouch for the food! It’s truly delicious! They also have a wide range of gifts and cards to choose from if you fancy doing a little shopping whilst you’re there.
All in all, I’d say it’s most definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area! Have you been here? I believe it’s rather popular with those that know of it. If you didn’t know of it’s existence, are you tempted to go try it out? I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!
If you look at the old images of Hebden on the Hebden Historical Data website, you will see two photographs of the school’s opening ceremony taken on the 25th August 1874:

Wow! That is so cool! Thank you for sharing 🙂
very nice place , they are very lucky nice school
Yes it is a very nice place and makes a lovely tearoom 🙂
yeah it was in the early 90’s I think my year (class of 2005!) Was one of the last to attend, my sister (3 years my junior) went to hebden lodge and never attended the old school nursery. I believe hebdem nursery is now in burnsall because the old lodge it was in was condemned (finally!)
That’s really interesting Colleen thank you so much for sharing that with me and my followers. I love hearing about the history of places 😍
The primary school closed in 1983. It then became a day nursery before becoming a tea room.
This sounds idyllic x
It is rather! 🙂
Interesting article Christine, it looks a lovely place to visit especially for families.
